Decks

What Makes a Good Deck?

Building a deck is a great way to maximize your space while improving curb appeal. You can design your deck any way you want, but there are a few fundamental elements you must consider to ensure proper design.

Triangle Home Exteriors discusses some of the features and qualities that make a good deck.

Design

Your deck can be much more than just a platform. Consider how you and your family would like to spend time in this area. If you enjoy barbecues, an outdoor kitchen with a permanent grill, refrigerator and a service area would be ideal. If you enjoy watching movies outside, you’ll need weatherproof equipment, including a projector and a good sound system.

A well-designed deck should blend in rather than stand out. It means its design should be consistent with the look of the main structure. When designing your deck, color and material are the first things you need to consider. Using the same or a similar color palette as the home’s exterior can also be a good starting point.

Construction

As mentioned, ensuring that your new deck’s style, design and color complement your home’s overall aesthetics is critical. Your deck mustn’t look out of place; after all, the structure is an extension of your home. One way to accomplish this is to select railings and posts that complement the design elements of your home’s entryways and porches.

Do not forget to consider the size of your deck. Make sure the decking and your house are on a reasonable scale. Smaller homes, for example, should have a smaller deck, while taller houses should have a higher deck. These design considerations will be discussed during the planning stage if you work with a reputable deck builder.

Foot Traffic

Consider how people will get to and from your deck. To ensure a free flow of movement between your home and the outdoor space, you’ll need to plan ahead of time. Connecting your deck to your kitchen, for example, makes moving food and dishes back and forth easier.

Deck installation provides an excellent opportunity to personalize your outdoor space with the features you’ve always desired. Among them are built-in furniture along the railings, plush pillows and hand-painted rugs.
