Color Combinations for Your Siding and Roof

So you’re thinking about improving your home’s exterior and you don’t want to make a mistake and affect your property’s curb appeal and overall value. One of the most important steps, of course, is to work only with reputable and professional home exterior remodeling companies. This project is not for DIY-ers or beginners, as there are too many things that could go wrong.

The appearance of your home is almost entirely a product of its roof and siding, as these are the largest components of your home’s exterior. How they match each other is a matter of taste, but if you want to be successful at this project, there are conventions to take into account.

Popular Color Combination Palettes

The good thing about following the most popular palettes is that you’re reducing the chances of making a mistake and having to redo your project. Materials and paints are not exactly cheap. Here are some of the most popular color combinations for roofs and siding:

  • Ivory Siding – Black Roof
  • Taupe Siding – Brown Roof
  • White Siding – Gray Roof
  • Gray Siding – Dark Gray Roof
  • Yellow Siding – Black Roof
  • Red Siding – Blue-Gray Roof

You can’t go wrong with these color combinations, but these are not your only options. Continue reading for more ideas.

The Basics

As there are popular color combinations, there are also basic steps in choosing your exterior color palette.

  1. Identify the Permanent Features of Your Home’s Exterior. These are the features of your home that do not change unless you give it a major remodel. Some examples are a brick chimney, a brick foundation, and stone columns.
  2. Understand the Style of Your Home. Where are you located and what type of houses are in your neighborhood? Is your home a traditional style or something more modern? The architecture of your home would be different if it’s located in a city from one located on the coastline.
  3. Learn About Exterior Design. You just have to understand the basics, because they include colors. There are rules when it comes to color combinations, and if you know them, you’re less likely to make an unattractive contrast.

Blending In vs. Standing Out

In many neighborhoods, homes are expected to blend in with the landscape. For example, roofs might all be gray in your area, and you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb by choosing a red roof. But if your neighborhood is known for the unique palettes, go ahead and choose what you really want.

In some areas where only one builder is always used but there are no rules that you should use the same builder or the same color palette, it’s fine to hire your own roofing and siding contractors and use your own color choices.

That being said, make sure to ask your HOA regarding colors and other exterior components, just to be respectful of your neighbors.

Using a Visualizer

You can find visualizers or color selectors online. Many of them you can use for free. There are even apps that allow you to upload pictures of your home so you can see it with different color combinations. These can help you visualize your home before you even start your project.
