How Fiber Cement Siding Can Fail

A lot of failed siding jobs usually look fine from a distance. But when examined up close, you’ll see the same installation errors happen again and again. Some of the jobs have gone to litigation while others, to homeowner complaints. They are all very expensive to repair. Triangle Home Exteriors, expert siding contractors, shows some common fiber cement siding failures.

Improper Nailing

Butt joints must be set over studs and the nails placed 3/4 inch up from the bottom edge and 3/8 inch from the ends. Some builders try to hold the ends down with a single nail. Some installers try to pin the ends down. Neither solution will provide enough holding power to secure the siding.

For blind nailing, fasteners must be at least 1 inch down from the top edge of the board, and 3/8 inch from the ends. A common mistake is nailing much closer to the top edge and overdriven nails. A fastener too close to an edge can cause the siding to break around it. Boards expand and contract with temperature changes or when wind pushes and pulls on them. The vibration caused by loose boards can hasten failure.

Home exterior remodeling companies must execute the right nailing to ensure siding efficiency.

Water Leakage

There are many egregious water-detailing problems too. One of the worst is a siding break made right above a dryer vent. Water leaking through this joint can get to the interior. Penetrations can also occur at the gas line near the meter and the hose bib. A siding slotted around a pipe or vent not only looks bad, but also exposes the wall to serious water and air leaks. The only solution to the problems mentioned above is proper siding installation.
