For blind nailing, fasteners must be at least 1 inch down from the top edge of the board, and 3/8 inch from the ends. A common mistake is nailing much closer to the top edge and overdriven nails. A fastener too close to an edge can cause the siding to break around it. Boards expand and contract with temperature changes or when wind pushes and pulls on them. The vibration caused by loose boards can hasten failure.

Water Leakage
There are many egregious water-detailing problems too. One of the worst is a siding break made right above a dryer vent. Water leaking through this joint can get to the interior.
