Should You Inspect Your Roof After a Hurricane?

Generally, all post-hurricane roof inspection and care should be entrusted only to professional home exterior remodeling companies. They have all the equipment, expertise and experience necessary to make a full diagnosis and implement all the needed repairs. Unfortunately, you might not have luck booking an inspection immediately after a storm. In this case, knowing the basics of inspecting hurricane damage on your roof would prove quite handy indeed.

Let our roofing experts at Triangle Home Exteriors walk you through the essentials of what to check if you suspect your roof has been damaged by a hurricane.

Safety First

Never leave the safety of your home during some extreme weather conditions. Wait until the authorities give an official all-clear signal before even attempting to contact your local roofing and siding contractors. You might get tempted to take a ladder up to the roof for a closer look but, generally speaking, this isn’t needed. A majority of storm-related roof damage can be easily spotted from the ground, eliminating the risk of falling from even a relatively low height. If needed, you can also use binoculars to identify individual damaged shingles.

The Attic

If your roof was damaged by a passing hurricane, it will show symptoms immediately in your attic. Look for leaks in your attic to see where the problem areas are and note them accordingly. Run your hand along the wooden support beams to check whether any of them are showing any signs of moisture damage.

Flashing and Gutters

Your roof is a system comprised of interconnected elements that help protect each other. During a storm flashing strips and gutters are often the most prone to damage caused by rain and high winds. Neglecting faulty gutters can lead to problems that might require an expensive roof replacement
