Debunking 4 Common Asphalt Roofing Myths

Despite the popularity of asphalt shingle roofing systems, many homeowners aren’t too aware of this roofing material. While some do, their knowledge of it stems from misconceptions that, unfortunately, continue to circulate in home improvement and roofing industries to this day. As a trusted roof replacement contractor in the area, we debunk four of the most common asphalt shingle roofing myths.

Myth 1: Asphalt Shingles Have Asbestos

Fact: This can be true if your roofing materials were manufactured in the 1950s and 1960s. Decades ago, asbestos was used to fireproof shingles and other roofing materials. However, because of its health risks, it was phased out. Nowadays, asphalt shingle manufacturers use other relatively safer materials to fireproof their products.

Myth 2: Dark Roofs Increase Cooling Costs

Fact: While it is true that light-colored roofs reflect light away from your home, it’s not true that the opposite color also brings the opposite effects. While dark-colored roofs do retain heat, it is not enough to create an impact on your home’s cooling costs. This is especially true if the roof is properly installed, insulated and ventilated. Home exterior remodeling companies like ours can help you choose roofing materials that can enhance your home’s aesthetic appeal while keeping your indoor temperatures cool.

Myth 3: Asphalt Shingle Roofs Don’t Need Much Upkeep

Fact: Asphalt shingles nowadays are capable of withstanding the elements, especially extreme temperatures, wind, and precipitation. Years down the line, however, they may become too worn down, which can compromise the structural integrity and weather performance of the entire roofing system. Like the rest of your home’s exterior components, you must make sure that your roof undergoes routine inspections and maintenance to keep it in great condition all year.

Myth 4: Asphalt Shingles All Look the Same

Fact: Some homeowners think that asphalt shingles appear the same, regardless of the brand. That’s not true at all; they come in different colors, textures and profiles. You can choose either the conventional three-tab shingles or the more sophisticated architectural shingles. The latter, in fact, can be manufactured to look like authentic wood shakes and slate tiles!
