How Coatings Extending Metal Roof Life Spans

Metal has long been a popular choice in the American roofing industry. It is trusted for its longevity, durability and strength-to-weight ratio. Home exterior remodeling companies recommend metal roofing systems, and homeowners love them.

Metal roofs, though, have seams and fasteners that can allow air and water seepage. So how can we negate these two major disadvantages? The answer is simple: metal roof coatings. When planning your next roofing project, consider these different metal roof coatings:

Barrier Coatings

Barrier coatings deprive metal of moisture that leads to corrosion. Paints are a good example of barrier protection. Yet, moisture, salt and acid rain can seep through paint films. These can corrode the underlying metal. The three main paint-type coatings are acrylic emulsions, polyesters and fluoropolymers.

Granular Coatings

Stone coatings are like asphalt shingle granules and are used on shake, tile and slate. They may develop moisture-related microbial problems, such as algae, lichen and moss. The resistance and durability of steel, which stand up to severe environmental changes, lessen the likelihood of unexpected roof replacement procedures. Lastly, they give metal roofing systems a timeless appeal.

Reflective Pigments

These were first used by the military to camouflage tanks against infrared detection. They reflect a larger spectrum of sunlight and can help reduce cooling costs. This pigment can achieve higher values for solar reflectance compared to the standard ones. They absorb visible light and then reflect it on what appears to be color in the human eyes. A metal roof uses inorganic pigments which have low infrared absorption. Thus, this coating cools down the roof structure.
