What Does Rippling in Asphalt Shingles Mean?

Maintaining your roofing system is the first and most important step in ensuring its longevity and performance. If you notice that your asphalt shingles are wavy or rippled, it’s something you shouldn’t ignore. This problem can occur in both new and old roofing systems. Continue reading to find out what causes this issue.

Age

If your roof is old and has developed a wavy appearance, there are a few possible culprits behind this. The most likely cause of an older roof that looks wavy is damaged decking. A professional inspection will be required to determine the extent of the problem.

Damaged Felt Underlay

Typically, a roofer will not remove more shingles than they can replace on the same day during roof replacement. This is to avoid exposing the underlayment to wet weather or morning dew for a long period. If roof underlayment comes in contact with water, the material would wrinkle. Your roofer must wait for the underlayment to dry completely so that the wrinkles would disappear. This will ensure your shingles have a flat surface where they can be installed. If your roofer staples the new shingles on wet felt, the shingles will likely look wavy.

Improper Sheathing Installation

Asphalt shingles are installed on the roof sheathing, which is a series of wood or OSB boards that cover the roof structure’s joists and trusses. Rippling occurs in the roof when the boards are installed without a gap, which is meant to allow for thermal expansion and contraction. If the sheathing is left exposed to the elements without a protective layer, the same thing will happen.

Faulty Craftsmanship

Ripples may also be due to incorrect stapling or nailing direction. Felt should always be stapled and shingles should always be nailed down in the direction the shingles are being laid. If shingles are not properly nailed down, they can be blown off during high winds or storms, causing leaky roof problems in the future.
