The World’s Most Famous Windows

Thoughtfully designed windows can have a big influence in the architectural integrity of your home. And with such a diverse range of uses, styles and functions it’s hardly surprising that there are some windows that are more incredibly important and fascinating than the rest.

A reputable specialist among window and siding contractors, Triangle Home Exteriors has compiled a list of some of the world’s most famous windows below:

Chicago Cultural Center (U.S.)

The Chicago Cultural Center is one of the most popular attractions in the country simply because of its comprehensive art showcases that feature critically acclaimed art exhibits, performances, and lectures for visitors, free of charge. However, it’s often the building itself that attracts visitors from around the world, as it houses the largest Tiffany glass dome ever built.

Built by the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, it’s a 38-foot diameter dome structure that contains approximately 30,000 individual glass pieces in 243 sections held within an ornate cast-iron frame.

Chartres Cathedral (France)

Chartres Cathedral, or the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Chartres, is a medieval cathedral. This cathedral has a fascinating history that’s even known to some contractors from home exterior remodeling companies. It’s primarily known for its three rose windows: the western rose displays the Last Judgement, the northern rose features the Virgin and Child, and the southern rose shows Christ surrounded by adoring angels. It’s also the last of at least five cathedrals built on the site. Nothing remains from the earliest cathedral, but the stained-glass windows have lasted since the early 13th century.

The builders designed Chartres to meet the needs of these stained-glass windows, as they feature three-part elevation with external buttressing which allows for much larger windows than earlier designs. Because of this, Chartres can support all 176 windows filled with dense, darkly colored stained glass.

The Pope’s Window (Italy)

The Papal Apartments have been the official residence of the Pope in his religious capacity since the 17th century. They consist of several rooms, including a medical and dental suite, a small studio office for the papal secretary, staff quarters for the Benedictine nuns, and the Pope’s own private study featuring the infamous papal window.

The Pope can be seen from this window every Sunday at noon, delivering a short speech followed by the Angelus prayer and Apostolic blessings to spectators gathered in Saint Peter’s Square below.
