Understanding Air Leakage

When choosing replacement windows, air leakage is a vital consideration. Moisture from air leaking out of your house can condense in hidden spaces and cause long-term damage. Serious issues like rotting roof sheathing, wet insulation and mold growth can occur if the air leak problem is not addressed right away.

To share more information about air infiltration, Triangle Home Exteriors discusses the basic facts you need to know about air leakage and why it is important.

Air Leakage Ratings

Air leakage ratings are calculated by measuring the amount of air that can pass through a window within a minute. That amount is then divided by the total window area. The smaller the number, the more energy-efficient the window.

However, there are times that the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) doesn’t recognize ratings below 0.1. This is because windows with air leakage ratings that are too low do not really have any noticeable difference. Some window companies also don’t display the air leakage ratings of their products. If you are looking to purchase energy-efficient windows, better watch out for those with no air leakage ratings.

Why Does the Air Leakage Rating Matter?

Air leakage is determined before installing a window. If you live in an average home with high air leakage, you probably spend up to 30% more on cooling and heating costs. To help you save money in the long run, you should get windows with air infiltration ratings below 0.3.
