Which Way Should Your Casement Windows Open?

Casement windows are opened by pivoting either left to right or right to left. That’s why they are labeled in one of two ways. FCL refers to a left-handed window, with the hinges located on the left side and the crank or locking mechanism on the right. FCR, meanwhile, refers to a right-handed window, with hinges and crank located on the opposite side.

Casement Window Pairs

If two casement windows are located next to one another, you may want to choose an FCL casement for the left window and an FCR casement for the right window. Double casements open in the middle, much like French doors, and create a larger area for air to enter your home. You may consider this tip if you have casement windows that are installed within bay and bow windows and for those located on either side of a picture window.

Ventilation

To maximize your windows’ ventilation capabilities, be sure to install FCL and FCR casement windows on opposite sides of the house. By doing so, you catch more breeze and send fresh, outdoor air into your home more effectively. For more effective ventilation, window and siding contractors recommend keeping them open at a 45-degree angle. 

Dominant Hand

It will be easier to open or close a casement window if the direction in which it operates matches your dominant hand. Hinges located on the right side of a casement window will swing right, and vice versa. You can open either a FCL or FCR casement window with either hand, but the crank spins in the opposite direction.

Aesthetics

Your contractor would be the first to tell you not to ruin your casement windows by misplacing them throughout your home. They may suggest that the hinged side of a casement window should be closest to the corner of the room. This ensures that all casements open toward the center of the living space, boosting the aesthetic appeal of your windows.
