Raised VS Ground-Level Deck: Which Is Best for Your Home?

Like roof replacement, adding a deck can improve the beauty and functionality of your home. When planning this project, you need to consider a lot of things, including the height of your deck. You can either go for a raised or ground-level deck.

Read on to find out which one is ideal for your home.

When to Choose a Raised Deck

The best height for your deck depends on the design of your home. Standard split-level or raised ranch-style homes usually have the main living area on the second floor. Decks on these houses are attached to the second floor, supported by strong posts anchored into the ground on piers.  They have a stairway going down to the yard that resembles the height of the stairs inside the house.

Home exterior remodeling companies can also install a raised deck in homes where the main living area is on the ground level. If you have a Cape Cod or center hall Colonial home, you could have your deck raised up to meet the threshold of the back door or around two feet high.

When to Choose a Ground-Level Deck

A ground-level deck is usually built on any level surface within your yard. It can be located in the middle of your A deck that’s placed next to the house but not attached is considered a platform. If you’re considering this type of deck, it would help to consult your local building department to determine whether you need a permit or not. Moreover, when it comes to the location of your deck, always consider its overall appearance and how it can enhance your landscape.
